# Registering YouTube cookies

> Use this before you first use the Magic Meal Kits YouTube modules (transcripts, metadata), or when they keep failing with authentication errors. Covers exporting and uploading your YouTube cookies.

YouTube often blocks requests that come from servers. For the Magic Meal Kits YouTube modules to fetch
transcripts and metadata reliably, register your YouTube login cookies with your server once.

<Note>
  Cookie upload works on Magic Meal Kits server **4.3.0 or later**. If you're on an older version,
  [upgrade](/installation#upgrading-redeploy) first.
</Note>

<Warning>
  * Requests go out as the account whose cookies you register. YouTube may restrict that account
    temporarily or permanently, so we recommend a **test Google account**.
  * You don't need YouTube Premium. A regular Google account works.
  * Private videos can't be fetched.
</Warning>

## 1. Export the cookie file (Chrome)

<Steps>
  <Step title="Install the extension">
    Install [Get cookies.txt LOCALLY](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/get-cookiestxt-locally/cclelndahbckbenkjhflpdbgdldlbecc).
    Type `chrome://extensions/` in the address bar and turn on **Allow in Incognito** for it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Log in to YouTube in an incognito window">
    Open a new incognito window and **make sure you log in** to [youtube.com](https://www.youtube.com).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Go to robots.txt">
    In the same incognito window and tab, go to `https://www.youtube.com/robots.txt`. This should be the
    only tab open in that window.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Export the cookies">
    Click the extension icon and export the `youtube.com` cookies to a file.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Close the incognito window right away">
    **Close the incognito window** as soon as you've exported. If it stays open, the session keeps being
    used and the cookies you just exported expire.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  The first line of the cookie file must be `# HTTP Cookie File` or `# Netscape HTTP Cookie File`. If it
  starts with anything else, it came from a different extension. Export it again with the one above.
</Tip>

## 2. Upload the cookies

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the YouTube Cookies screen">
    At [make.magicmealkits.com](https://make.magicmealkits.com), open **YouTube Cookies** (YouTube 쿠키)
    in the left menu. If it asks you to connect Google Cloud first, click **Connect Google Cloud**
    (Google Cloud 연결).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Paste and upload">
    Paste the file contents into **Paste cookies** (쿠키 붙여넣기) or pick the file, then click
    **Upload cookies** (쿠키 업로드). You're done when you see **Cookies valid** (쿠키 유효).
    <Info>Screenshot coming soon: the YouTube Cookies screen</Info>
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  To register them from a Make scenario instead, use the [YouTube Cookie Upload template](https://www.make.com/en/integration/15525-magic-meal-kits-youtube-cookie-upload?templatePublicId=15525).
  It takes a cookie file from Google Drive and registers it with the **Register YouTube Cookies** module.
</Note>

## If authentication errors continue

An authentication failure in the YouTube modules most likely means something went wrong while
registering the cookies. Close every incognito window and start again from step 1. If it still fails,
